Del Bennett
Jazz-rock fusion is a challenging endeavor on any instrument. While saxophonists, keyboard wizards and guitar virtuosos generally rule this world, other instruments occasionally make their way into the spotlight.

In the spirit of artists such as Billy Cobham and Tony Williams, Del Bennett has used his drum set as a true lead instrument on his debut CD, Full Circle. In collaboration with Milwaukee guitar hero Mark Woerpel, Bennett achieves an accessible blend of jazz rhythms and rock melody.

Artists like Chick Corea come to mind as hard down beats rise to meet smooth layers of textured syncopation that crescendo to weather report-like complexity.

Not to be overlooked are the contributions of Theo Merriweather (keys), Eric Hervey (bass) and Tony Ayala (percussion).

INDEPENDENT GROOVE

DEL BENNETT certainly has chops. But more importantly, he puts them to good used on Full Circle, with a solid supporting cast featuring guitarist Mark Woerpel, Bennett injects life and a sense of freedom into this set, becoming small during ambient sections, and rising with the tide on the big grooves. This is intelligent fusion-making, rewarding for the players and listeners.

Soul Power: With the range of Sarah Vaughan, the intonation of Ella Fitzgerald and the power and soul of Aretha Franklin, Deirdre Fellner has put her hometown of Sturgeon Bay on the map. A product of artistic parents, Fellner was classically trained from an early age. She relocated to Milwaukee for her debut release Fixin' to Wail. With prestigious performances, rave reviews and good record sales, Fixin' was picked up by Italy's Comet Records.

Her latest, Soul, is recorded with her band, Whole of Soul. The ensemble of noteworthies includes drummer extraordinaire Del Bennett, Scott Currier (keys), Steve Peplin (guitar) and Eric Hervey (bass) - each with strong regional reputations for excellence. Fellner floats through the CD with a soul-meets-R&B-style that enters the world of gospel in cuts like "Believe," while "Gotta Get Out" turns funky after a Manhattan Transfer-like intro sets the tempo. Fellner has truly "made her bones" with this record, with an astounding vocal range and the ability to create moving music. Deirdre Fellner & the Whole of Soul's CD Release party 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3 at the Velvet Room.
